I. Discipline Overview
Safety Science and Engineering is a general term for the disciplines, specialties and categories that combine the basic theory of safety science with safety engineering technology, management and practice. The main discipline directions include: safety science which reveals the objective laws of safety and provides discipline theory, application theory and professional theory; safety technology which ensures that people's lives and health are protected and their bodies and equipment and properties are not damaged in production and life, and provides direct and indirect protection; safety systems engineering which comprehensively uses the knowledge of systems theory, operations research, probability theory, decision theory, mathematical statistics, cybernetics and safety science theory to research the analysis, planning, design, organization, management, evaluation and control of safety systems; and safety and emergency management which is the process of organizing and using various resources such as human resources, material resources, financial resources and environment for realizing safety.
Safety Science and Engineering of Nanjing Tech University is a discipline that studies safety technology and management in modern urban and industrial production, especially in the production of chemical and petrochemical industries, and it is an emerging comprehensive discipline arising from the intersection of multiple disciplines. Students are required to master the basic theories and technical knowledge of engineering mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, combustion and explosion theory, heat and mass transfer, similar theory and simulation methods, and safety principles related to safety science and technology, and to grasp the progress of safety technology and engineering disciplines. It mainly develops relevant research on hazardous chemical safety, chemical process safety, urban public safety and other aspects.

IV. Study Period and Credits
The study period of full-time academic doctoral students is generally 4 years. If you really need to extend the study period, you must file an application for it yourself, which should be agreed by the supervisor or supervisory group, reviewed by the college, and then reported to the Graduate School of the University for approval.
The minimum total credits required for academic doctoral students is 12 credits, including 6 credits for courses and 6 credits for compulsory links.

VI. Compulsory Links Management
1. Academic report training (2 credits)
Doctoral students must make special reports at academic seminars as required. During the academic period, each doctoral student must make no less than 4 reports, and meet the needs of at least 4 reports in total to obtain 2 credits for academic report training.
2. Academic lectures/reports (2 credits)
Doctoral students must attend at least fifteen academic seminars on and off campus during their study period, including at least five academic seminars arranged by the Graduate School, at least two lectures on the quality of humanities and aesthetics, and other lectures arranged by the college, and only those who have attended a total of at least fifteen seminars can obtain 2 credits for lectures/reports
Students in the full-time combined master and doctor degree program and bachlor-straight-to-doctorate students must attend at least twenty academic seminars, of which, at least seven seminars are arranged by the Graduate School, at least two lectures are on the quality of humanities and aesthetics, and the others are arranged by each college, and only those who have attended a total of twenty seminars can obtain two credits for lectures/reports.
3. Attending international academic conferences or overseas exchange visits (2 credits)
Doctoral students must attend one to two important international academic conferences with high academic influence organized by authoritative academic institutions or overseas exchange visits for more than 3 months during their study period in order to obtain 2 credits for the session.
VII. Thesis
1. Basic requirements for thesis
The thesis must be completed independently under the supervision of the supervisor, and should have new insights on the subject under study or innovation, showing that the author has the ability to independently engage in scientific research or to take up technical and management work. The actual work on the thesis usually lasts for not less than three years.
The thesis should have a correct topic, a feasible proposal, novelty, close connection between theory and practice, reliable data, rigorous analysis, conclusive arguments, and show the student's ability to independently analyze and solve problems. The thesis should present smooth written expressions, rigorous structures and strong logic. Its conclusions should be of important reference value and guiding significance.
2. Thesis proposal
The topic chosen for a doctoral student's thesis should be approved by the supervisor. After admission, doctoral students determine their research direction under the guidance of their supervisors; grasp the previous research results, the current situation and development dynamics at home and abroad in this discipline by means of reviewing literature, materials, investigation and research, and determine specific research topics on this basis.
The topic of the thesis should be scientific and forward-looking, and emphasizes the combination with the projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and key scientific research projects of provincial and ministerial level and above, etc.
The number of the proposal report should be about 5000 words; more than 100 main references should be read, among which foreign references should account for more than one-third.
In principle, the time for doctoral students to write the proposal report is determined by the institute according to the actual situation after the completion of the main courses specified in the cultivation plan. After the time for the proposal report is determined by the Institute, it must be submitted to the College for record.
The requirements on the proposal report are detailed in the "Requirements of Nanjing Tech University on the Proposal Report of Graduate Students" (Nan Gong (2014) Yan Zi No. 17).
3. Mid-term assessment
The mid-term examination of the thesis is required to be completed in the fourth semester after enrollment. It is divided into two parts: the writing of the Mid-term Assessment Form for Doctoral Students by themselves, and the mid-term examination and defense meeting. The specific requirements for the mid-term examination are detailed in the Implementation Rules for Mid-term Assessment of Doctoral Students in the College of Safety Science and Engineering.
4. Pre-defense (pre-review)
The pre-defense of the thesis can be held within the first four weeks after the start of the eighth semester of the doctoral program, and can be adjusted according to the actual progress of the doctoral research topic. The pre-defense expert panel is composed of three to five experts from relevant disciplines, including one expert as the leader. The members of the expert panel for the pre-defense of doctoral thesis shall have a senior professional technical title such as professor.
The pre-defense panel shall grade the pre-defense of the doctoral students by secret ballot, and based on a percentage system. When the score is greater than or equal to 80: the thesis can be submitted for review after being perfected, finalized, checked and approved by the supervisor; when the score is 70-80 (excluding 80): the thesis must be revised in earnest, and three months later, checked and approved by the supervisor, and then applied for review; when the score is lower than 70: the thesis must be revised in earnest, and six months later, reviewed by the supervisor, and then be subject to pre-defense again.
5. Thesis review and defense
Doctoral students can apply for defense after completing all the links and credits stipulated in the cultivation plan. The specific requirements for the thesis review and defense are detailed in the Detailed Rules for the Doctoral Thesis Defense and Review and Degree Application of Nanjing Tech University.
6. Academic achievement requirements
The requirements for the publication of academic thesis and scientific research achievements of doctoral students in safety science and engineering are implemented in accordance with the document "Measures for Assessment of Scientific Research Achievements of Doctor's Degree Applicants of Nanjing Tech University" issued by the university.
VIII. Criteria for Graduation and Degree Awarding
The criteria for graduation and degree awarding of doctoral students in safety science and engineering should be implemented in accordance with relevant regulations of the university.
