Civil Engineering
(Discipline Code: 0814)
I. Discipline Overview
Civil engineering is the collective name for the science and technology of building various types of engineering facilities. It refers to not only the object of engineering construction, i.e. all kinds of engineering facilities built above ground, underground, under water, etc., but also the materials and equipment applied and the professional technology carried out including survey, design, construction, management, monitoring, maintenance, etc. As society and technology progress, civil engineering is constantly being given new connotations, which has greatly improved the quality of human production and life, and occupies an extremely important position in the national economy and social development. The seven second-level disciplines in the first-level discipline of civil engineering include: geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, municipal engineering, heating, gas supply, ventilation and air conditioning engineering, disaster prevention and mitigation engineering and protection engineering, bridge and tunnel engineering, and civil engineering construction and management.
The civil engineering discipline of the University originated from Tongji Medical and Engineering College in 1915, one of the seven colleges and universities under the former Ministry of Construction. It is a national characteristic specialty and one of the first batch of pilot majors of the National Excellent Engineer Education Training Program. The discipline was awarded the master's program for the first-level discipline of civil engineering in 1999, independently set up the doctor station for civil engineering materials and engineering in 2002, received approval for the postdoctoral mobile station for civil engineering in 2009, and received approval for the doctor station for the first-level discipline of civil engineering in 2010. The discipline was awarded the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in 2007, Jiangsu Green Construction Engineering Technical Research Co., Ltd. in 2011, the Assembly Building Industry Base of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development in 2017, and Jiangsu Laboratory of Green High-Performance Materials and Structures Engineering in 2017. The discipline has a long history and solid foundation, including all seven secondary disciplines and two self-established disciplines.

Remark |
Students have a free choice of professional elective courses among all the courses in the university according to the requirements of instructors and their research topics. |
VI. Compulsory Links Management
1. Academic lectures/reports (2 credits)
Academic master students must attend at least fifteen academic seminars on and off campus during their studies, including at least five academic seminars arranged by the Graduate School and at least two lectures on the quality of humanities and aesthetics, and other lectures arranged by each college, and only those who have attended at least fifteen seminars can obtain the two credits for lectures/reports.
2. Academic practice (2 credits)
During the study period, academic master students must participate in one of the following academic practice activities: graduate student science and technology forum, graduate student summer school, graduate student academic innovation forum, graduate student research innovation practice competition, high-level international and domestic academic conferences or overseas exchange visits, and labor practice, and participate in activities such as sunshine run on campus and sports meeting, in order to obtain 2 credits for academic practice.
VII. Thesis
1. Basic requirements for thesis
The thesis is an important part of the cultivation of master students, which is comprehensive training for master students to conduct scientific research or undertake specialized technical work, and is an important step to cultivate the innovative ability of master students and their ability to discover, analyze and solve problems by comprehensively applying the knowledge they have learned. Each discipline can define detailed rules for the implementation of the thesis proposal, mid-term assessment, acceptance of experimental results, repetition rate check, review, posting and defense of thesis according to its characteristics.
The basic requirements for thesis are detailed in the Basic Requirements for Doctoral and Master's Degrees in First-Level Disciplines (published by Higher Education Press, edited by the Sixth Discipline Review Group of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council). The requirements for thesis defense, review and degree application are detailed in the Detailed Rules for the Master's Thesis Defense and Review and Degree Application of Nanjing Tech University.
2. Thesis proposal
Under the guidance of the supervisor, academic master students should determine the research direction, identify the research topic through literature review, data collection, investigation and research while studying courses, then write literature review for the topic selected, and write the proposal at the end of the third semester or the beginning of the fourth semester. Requirements on the topic selection and proposal of the thesis for master students are detailed in the Requirements for the Thesis Proposal of Graduate Students of Nanjing Tech University.
3. Thesis review and defense
Academic master students can apply for defense after completing all the links and credits stipulated in the cultivation plan. Specific requirements for thesis review and defense are detailed in the Detailed Rules for the Master's Thesis Defense and Review and Degree Application of Nanjing Tech University.
4. Academic achievement requirements
Requirements for academic master students' academic achievements are detailed in the Measures for Assessment of Scientific Research Achievements of Master's Degree Applicants of Nanjing Tech University.
VIII. Criteria for Graduation and Degree Awarding
The criteria for graduation and degree awarding shall conform with the relevant regulations of the university.
