In the afternoon of February 22nd, Yang Weize, Standing Committee Member of Jiangsu Provincial Committee of CPC and Secretary of the Nanjing Municipal Committee of CPC, delivered a keynote speech on “A call for the Construction of a Stanford-Style University in Nanjing” on the Jiangpu campus of NJUT. Many provincial, municipal and Pukou district leaders include Liu Yi’an, Xu Zhongzi, Wang Weisong, Sun Weiqin, Qi Yuwei, Cheng Yuxiang came to attend the lecture. The report conference was presided by President Ouyang Pingka and attended by three thousands of teachers and students. In the beginning, President Ouyang Pingkai made a brief introduction of Secretary Yang Weize and mentioned that Secretary Yang Weize has always been a great supporter to NJUT since many year ago.
In his speech, Secretary Yang explained the relationship between modern cities and universities and brought us a short film shot by Nanjing TV Station to illustrate the reason why Nanjing needs universities like Stanford University. The film demonstrated the innovation in Silicon Valley, form which we could find out the important role that Stanford University had played the in the course of development of Silicon Valley. There are many innovative ideas in the running of Stanford University in teaching, management and industrialization of research findings, which can be good examples of NJUT. Yang also pointed out that the Nanjing Municipal Government will also take some responsibilities in the building up of a Stanford-Style university by making university favored- policies to boost the innovation both in universities school-running and universities' cooperation with enterprises in the commercialization of research findings.
After Yang's speech, President Ouyang Pingkai made a summing-up speech and encouraged all the teachers and students to work hard and make contribution to the construction of an innovative Nanjing. Secretary Yang exchanged ideas with some NJUT teachers and students. Secretary Yang visited the National Engineering Research Center for Biotechnology, the Talents' Apartment Building, the under-construction project for the 2013 Asian Youth Games and the Shi Jun Garden, a specific place to commemorate the great scientist Shi Jun. Secretary Yang's last stop at NJUT was the State University Science Park of NJUT. In the end of his visit, Secretary Yang highly praised the achievements made by NJUT and strongly believed that a Stanford-Style University will come into being under the efforts jointly made by government, enterprises and university.
